The industry’s commitment isn’t just words on paper. The rice industry has developed a number of flagship initiatives to coordinate improved environmental management and stewardship. These initiatives cover biodiversity, the greenhouse challenge and industry improvement; and all fall under the rice industry’s Environmental Champions Program. It also participates in the Environmental Management Systems Pathways and Pilot Programs supported through funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

The Australian Rice industry has also initiated an innovative recycling project whereby farmers can deposit their waste oil in 9 locations throughout the rice growing region which is collected for recycling and re-refining for sale as oil products they can re-use.

About Environmental Champions:

Environmental Champions is a five level achievement program that guides rice growers through a series of activities. The program design is to connect environmental performance with better farm business performance. The Champions Program sets the bar for industry standards in environmental performance and was developed in cooperation with rice growers, various government agencies and organisations.

Growers work together with other farmers to achieve environmental outcomes for the whole region, not just on their farm. Activities may include looking at land use options on a regional scale, engaging in carbon & salinity trade and addressing other landscape and river issues.
